Chapter 9: Excerpts from Kozlov's Diary IV
The notes from pp. 4-39 to 4-47 start with the sentence ‘Ночь с 1/IV- 2/IV у Т. в мастерской.’ (‘Spent the night from the first to the second of April in T. [Timur Novkov's] studio.’). They therefore follow the delivery of works to the Palace of the Youth on 31 March or 1 April. The notes include what was defined in Chapter 3 as ‘post-factum’ lists — the sixth, seventh, and eighth lists establishing changes in what was already displayed at the exhibtion, but not yet shown publicly. After the introductory remark (‘Spent the night…’), Kozlov continues with a statement about the removal of two paintings from the exhibition – ‘House’ and ‘Double painting’ – which leads him to some general reflections on how to select works for an exhibition. Following that, he establishes several principles for the creation of paintings, taking into consideration their effect on viewers. He stresses the importance of expanding an idea with different paintings, reinforcing one‘s findings. Kozlov argues that only then are viewers able to connect themselves with, or can be led to, a system relating to high taste – high taste as he himself understands it. (p. 4-44 ввести в систему контакта по отношению к высокому вкусу, так как его понимаю.) The text fragment ends with a statement dated 2 April where he confirms that he actually removed the two paintings from the exhibition and lists those works remaining (pp. 4-46-47. However, the list of works left (the eight list, p. 4-47) is not congruent with those works documented at the exhibtion. Exhibition views from 5 April document more paintings (three, not two) and less drawings (three, not six; possibly, not all drawings were documented).
