Editor's note The exhibition "С Новым годом" (Happy New Year) opened at the Leningrad Rock Club on December 27, 1985 more>>. On the same evening, a Pop Mekhanika concert took place at the Rock Club. Of the participating artists, Novikov, Kotelnikov, Kozlov, Krisanov and Bugaev also performed on stage.
The title of the concert – The New Year Concert of Hunting for the Indo-Tibetan Goat – is from Sergey Chubraev's chronology of Sergey Kuryokhin's concerts. Like often with Pop Mekhanika concerts, the title was applied later. An article by Alek Zander – one of the pseudonyms of Alexander Startsev, Александр Старцев – published in the Leningrad samizdat magazine Roksi no10 dedicated to September-December 1985, gives a short description of the evening. The magazine appeared at the beginning of 1986 and doesn't mention the concert's title, but simply calls it "New Year concert". According to Zander, musicians Boris Andreev, Vladimir Rekshan, Levi, Maik [Naumenko], Viktor Tsoy, and Boris Grebenshikov performed in the first part of the evening. The second part was Sergey Kuryokhin's Pop Mekahnika concert. (An earlier version of this article relied on a different source and indicated the 29th of December as the date of the concert.)
External link >>
During the Pop Mekhanika performance, artists and musicians painted directly on stage, on one or several huge pieces of textile; according to Timur Novikov, its total size was 4 x 12 ms. The resulting graffiti work was cut into pieces towards the end of the performance.
(E-E) Evgenij Kozlov's photographs of the Pop Mekhanika performance are shown in chronological order. The artist first used a colour slide ORWO film, then a black and white negative SVEMA film, and continued with another colour slide ORWO film.
Of the SVEMA film, most negatives are no longer availabe, and the scan was done directly from the vintage contact print
The compilation of names of musicians and artists was carried out by Hannelore Fobo and Sergey Chubraev.
The names are listed from left to right. English transliteration of Russian names follows the common phonetic rules, but they may differ from other established forms if the artist or musicians uses a standard spelling, for instance "Grebenshikov” instead of "Grebenshchikov.”
The list of names is non-exhaustive and may include errors. Members of the folklore ensmeble – in all likelihood folklore ensemble A. Fedko see also PM 1986 – were not identified.
