Text deutsch / english / русский

The world of Ivan Sotnikov is filled with urban folklore. Here reside his legendary figures – the pine tree people and the striding automobiles. They possess a naive and pristine charm, which is also present in his illustrations for children. For example, the story of the black hand that drifts through the house and carries the children form their bed is one of the spooky stories that the children love to tell each other at bedtime. – He draws both for and with children. it is their creativity which is most unspoiled.

“In Russian there are three words that characterize virtually the same concept: creation (tvorchestvo), art (iskusstvo) and artistic (khudozhestvo).

The Creator has created us in 'His own image' (1. Genesis 1.27) and by our free will and with our given power of creation we are all his equal.

'Blessed are the peace makers, they shall be called God's children' (Matthew, 5.9) They are not only peace makers (primiriteli), but also the makers of the world (sotvortzy mira), according to our deceased Father Aleksei Panteleimonov. [Translator's note: in Russian "world" and "peace" are represented by a single word – 'mir.']

Indeed the work of man is seldom only distantly reminiscent of the Lord. 'Let a hundred blades of grass grow and a thousand flowers bloom', said Mao Tse-tung. There are wonderful herbs that are nothing more than poisonous weeds.

P.S. Clearly, art (iskusstvo) derives from temptation (iskushenie). As Evdovkia Konstantinovna Medvedeva – the grandmother of Andrei Medvedev – said: the word 'artist' (khudozhnik) derives from 'living badly' (khudo zhit')."
