The Leningrad Rock Club celebrated its 5th anniversary with a concert on 7 March 1986, at its premises on 13, Rubinshtein street. On 14 and 15 March 1986, three more rock concerts took place at the Leningrad Palace of Youth (Ленинградский Дворец Молодежи, ЛДМ/LDM).
Evgeny Khavtan, frontman and founder (together with Pavel Kuzin) of the Moscow band "Bravo" (Браво), has kept a poster announcing the concerts on 14 and 15 March as the "Spring Music Festival” (Весенний музыкальный праздник).
Altough the poster has no mention of the Leningrad Rock Club, those concerts stood in close relation to the Rock Club's Fifth Anniversary. According to Olga Slobodskaya – at that time the Rock Club's secretary – the official organiser of the concerts was “Fonograf”, a section of the Leningrad Palace of Youth. The head of "Fonograf" was Nikolai Mikhailov, who was also chairmain of the Leningrad Rock Club. Hence "We may consider them as Rock Club concerts, although formally they were Fonograf concerts" ("считай что рок-клуба концерты, но формально - Фонографа", message by Olga Slobodskaya to Arkady Volk, 23. 7. 2019).
On the evening of 14 March, a Friday, the public enjoyed performances of the bands “AVIA” (АВИА) and Aquarium (Аквариум). Saturday, 15 March offered a double concert with a total of three bands: “Tele U” (Теле У) and “Bravo” at 13.00 hrs, and “Kino” (Кино) and “Bravo” at 17.00 hrs. With the exception of Bravo, all bands were Leningrad-based and already quite well-known in their home-town, at least among the so-called "subculture".
Alexis Ipatovtsev, media mananger of "Aquarium”, draw my attention to the fact that Moscow bands could not perform at the Leningrad Rock Club – which was indeed a branch of the ”Leningrad Inter-Union House of Amateur Culture” (Ленинградский Межсоюзный Дом Самодеятельного Творчества), and the musicians were its affiliated members more>>. Therefore “Bravo” was invited to perform at the Leningrad Palace of Youth. As it was the band's first Leningrad gig, they performed twice on the same day.
(E-E) Evgenij Kozlov visited one or perhaps both concerts on Saturday, 15 March 1986.
Given the relaxed atmosphere of the gathering, we may assume that the photos were taken during the afternoon break between the first and the second concerts. We see Leningrad's "usual suspects" from the so-called underground culture – people regularly meeting at exhibition openings of “unofficial” artists, at Rock Club concerts, and at similar public or private activities – the core of whom consituted the line-up of Sergey Kuryokhin's “Pop-Mekhanika” (Поп-механика) concerts of that period.
See Kozlov's films taken at the PM concert on 27 December 1985 at the Rock Club more>>, the PM concert for the documentary "Dialogues", filmed in May 1986 at the Mayak House of Culture more>>, and the PM concert at the Leningrad Palace of Youth on 20 October 1986 more>>.
Other Leningrad musicians documented by Kozlov were Svyatoslav “Alisa” Zadery, founder of the bands "Alisa” (Алиса) and "Nate!” (Нате!), and Igor “Dlinny” Borisov, guitarist of "Nate!”
The Moscow band "Bravo“ is documented with Evgeny Khavtan, Timur Murtuzaev, Pavel Kuzin, and Zhanna Aguzarova. It is reasonable to assume that a number of Bravo fans followed the band to Leningrad, but there were also several musicians from the Moscow band “Vezhlivi Otkaz” (Вежливый отказ = Polite Refusal), founded in October 1985: musicians Roman Suslov and Dmitri Shumilov, as well as poets Arkady Semenov and Gor Chakhal (Oganisian) who both wrote lyrics for “Vezhlivi Otkaz”.
For obvious reasons, Kozlov's personal choice of “motifs” only allows us to determine a fraction of those who attended the concert. As always, Kozlov subordinated documentation to art, looking for an interesting glance, gesture or pose that would inspire his creative work: the frames of negative films would have the function of a sketchbook. Kozlov selected a frame with Sergei Bugaev (BV46) and another one with Timur Novikov (BV65) for vintage prints he transformed into painted photo collages (see below), a technique he had been developing since 1984 more>>. The works became part of his album "It's the Fashion” more>>.
Kozlov did not document the concerts themselves, although we see Boris Grebenshikov standing among a motionless audience, seated on chairs and looking towards the stage (AQ21). The next two and also last pictures from the Leningrad Palace of Youth are with Viktor Tsoy walking on stage (AQ31) and Sergey Kuryokhin dressed in his coat (AQ32), respectively. It is impossible to say when excatly these two were taken – perhaps after the performance of Kino and before the performance of Bravo. The following pictures (beginning with AQ33) were already taken at the Leningrad restaurant “Neva”, where Kozlov continued the evening in a small company of friends: Dmitri Pavlov, Timur Novikov and Alla Chachina.
In the mid-1980s, Dmitri Pavlov, a composer and pianist who graduated from the Leningrad conservatory, played with a band entertaining guests at both the restaurant “Neva” and the luxury restaurant "Okean"; it helped him to pay off his state-of-the art Japanese Roland D50 synthesizer, one of two that existed in Leningrad at that time more>>. Pavlov used it for his Concerto for Piano, Computer, and Orchestra (1987) more>>.
