‘Popular Mechanics’ Moers, 1989

18 Internationales New Jazz Festival Moers Pfingsten`89 (Germany),
12-15 May, 1989
© all pictures: Hans Kumpf

Hans Kumpf's pictures show two performances at different venues:

– a larger one with Sergey Kuryokhin (Сергей Курёхин, conductor, piano), Mikhail Kostyushkin (Михаил Костюшкин, saxophone), Alexander Liapin (Александр Ляпин, guitar), Vladimir Tarasov (Владимир Тарасов, percussion), and German musicians, as well as artist Timur Novikov (Тимур Новиков) taking care of a goat and several geese.
According to Sergey Chubraev's chronicle, other participating musicians and performers from Leningrad artists were Vladimir Chekasin (Владимир Чекасин) , Sergey Chernov (Сергей Чернов), Oleg Garkusha, (Олег Гаркуша), Sergey Bugaev (Сергей Бугаев), and Anton Adasinsky (Антон Адасинский). They are, however, not documented in Hans Kumpf's pictures.

– a smaller one with Sergey Kuryokhin, Mikhail Kostyushkin, Alexander Liapin, and Vladimir Tarasov.

The pictures also show producer Leo Feigin and Jazz musicians Larry Ochs and John Zorn.

Kumpf’s pictures of the larger performance show as a main (early) PM “element” animals on stage, but otherwise there were no costumes, little stage decoration, and no “exotic” guest musicians. The German public reacted negatively to the presence of animals. In his epitaph for Sergey Kuryokhin from 1997, Hans Kumpf wrote “I was quite ill at ease with Kuryokhin’s festival show when he started to stage scared hens and a goat which hid away under a piano. A nuanced musical performance such as on our record ‘Jam Session Leningrad˚ meant much more to me.“
(translated from the German from http://jazzpages.com/kumpf/ku_kury.html )

Saxophonist Sergey Letov, on the other hand, accused the Western public of "not being ready for joyous madness". Letov, who was not himself present at Moers (but perhaps at Vienna) stated "In Moers, simple-minded German “Green” came to defend the goat, which was not presented with due respect. Austrians were offended because in their opinion their folklore group was not presented with due respect. The West was unable to understand the fusion of different layers of reality. Famous 'Pop-Mekhanika' caused disenchantment". (2007) (translated from the Russian from http://www.yahha.com/article.php?sid=126 )
