Introduction

The exhibition "Nevski Prospekt Underground" was the visual art section of the Leningrad / Saint Petersburg edition of Les Allumées see introduction to Les Allumées Nantes/ Saint Petersburg >>. It brought together some of the most important independent Leningrad artists and artist groups from the late 1980s, among them the New Artists and the Necrorealists. Patricia Solini, curator from the French side, worked together with Michail Trofimenkov. Trofimenkov, born in Leningrad in 1966, had written a text for the first official Leningrad exhibition of the "New Artists" in 1988 and was friends with many artists from the Leningrad sub-culture, but another essential asset was his knowledge of French. Trofimenkov was familiar with French culture, especially cinema, and later became a leading Russian film reviewer.

Les Allumées – Nantes/Saint Petersburg, 1991 The festival and the exhibition were offically announced in Saint Petersburg in March 1991. The picture shows Michail Trofimenkov and Patricia Solini at the press conference.

The festival committee, CRIC Nantes, decided to use a former train station as exhibition venue – the "gare de l'état" or State railway station at Nantes. The large three-storey building, erected at the end of the nineteenth century in a neoclassical style, had been closed in 1980 and earmarked for demolition, but public protest stopped the plan. After careful restoration in the 1990s, it has since become the "House of Unions".

"Nevski Prospekt Underground" mainly used the station‘s ground floor premises. Larger and smaller halls and corridors allowed to give artist groups or individual artists separate areas, and some of the walls were broken to make for additional passages.

Most exhibits arrived at Nantes by ship, together with the artists – not long before the opening. Consequently, the installation of works had to be carried out rather fast. Still, at least one painting was created on the spot, as demonstrated by the picture with Maslov, Zaika and Kuznetsov painting a work by Zaika, a motif with tools.

The largest single cycle of works was (E-E) Evgenij Kozlov's collection "2x3m", with a total of sixteen paintings (at that time), each in either a 2x3m or 3x2m format. The collection "2x3m" included, among others, a number of "New Artists" (Oleg Kotelnikov 2x3m (1990), more, two works by Ivan Sotnikov 2x3m (1990), 2x3m (1990), more , Vladislav Gutsevich 2x3m (1990) and two works by young Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe 2x3m (1990), 2x3m (1990). Kozlov also showed several of his own works from 1990. It was the second exhibition of "2x3m", following the exhibition on Palace Bridge, Leningrad, in the summer of 1990 with six works. More about the collection "2x3m" >>

The Necrorealists were present with four of the group's members: Evgeny Yufit see 2x3m (1994), Valery Morozov see 2x3m (1990),more , Sergey Barekov "Serp", and Vladimir Kustov see 2x3m (1994).

The artist group "The Party of Free Men" or PFM, with Oleg Maslov, Oleg Zaika and Alexei Kozin presented only one joint work; the other ones can be identified as a joint work by Maslov and Kozin (which was restaured prior to the opening) and several individual works by either Oleg Maslov more or Oleg Zaika more. According to the "Nevski Prospekt Underground" catalogue, the "PFM" group was formed by three members, while other sources name only Maslov and Kozin.

Be that as it may, in 1991, Maslov and Kozin had already split, and no later than 1993 Maslov would join Viktor Kuznetsov, who showed, at Nantes, works created under his artist name "Gipper Puper". As "Viktor & Oleg" see 2x3m (1995), Kuznetsov and Maslov would completely depart from their previous ("Nantes") styles, becoming leading members of the Saint Petersburg neo-academic movement led by Timur Novikov see 2x3m (1995) .

Enver Baikev, Bella Matveeva more and Sergei Bugaev (Afrika) each presented individual positions.

Photographer Vladimir Peshkov and myself each showed documentations of the Leningrad art-scene. Peshkov is mentioned in the catalogue, but not in the invitation card, and perhaps his pictures about the "Saigon" café, a legendary meeting place of the Leningrad underground scene (closed in 1989), were displayed at another festival venue. Our archive has no documentation of Peshkov's photos.

My pictures were shown in two different areas of the gare de l‘état. A selection of my artists' portraits from 1990 / 1991 could be seen in a room on the upper floor of the building, while my documentation of the first exhibition on Palace Bridge (Leningrad, 22-23 July 1990), was displayed next to the collection "2x3m". This was a matter of logic: as mentioned above, the first exhibition on Palace Bridge was also the first exhibition of the "2x3m" more >>. Now, at Nantes, these photographs were close to "Zodiac", my own work for this unique collection, placed next to one of Mamyshev-Monroe‘s 2x3m painting.

In 1990, Kozlov had invited me to make a contribution for the exhibition on Palace Bridge, but on the day of the exhibition, the oil paint I used was not yet entirely dried (in 1990, acryllic paint still was very difficult to get in Leningrad). "Zodiac" was therefore displayed for the first time in Nantes. As Kozlov created "2x3m" as a collection of Russian art, he later decided to make up – within the collection – a separate section with some international contributions, to which "Zodiac" now belongs.

Although the exhibition opened on 14 October, the official opening took place one day later, on 15 October, 9.00 p.m. On that evening, the Art Museum of Nantes (musée des Beaux-Art de Nantes) projected works by Russian artists from its collection onto the façade of the gare de l‘état.

In order to document the festival in general and the exhibition in particular, Kozlov used his Bauer VHS video camera, while I took pictures with a Pentax camera and a 35mm slide film, but we also exchanged the cameras to film each other.

Most exhibits appear in the video at one point or another, but the documentation might not be exhaustive. At least with respect to the collection "2x3m" this can be said for works by Nikolaev, Savchenkov see 2x3m (1990), Strelnikov, and Luthe, whose names are in the catalogue, although it is now impossible to say whether they were actually displayed.

Sadly, the circumstances of the exhibits returning to Saint Petersburg led to the loss of both works by Vladislav Mamychev-Monroe from the collection "2x3m". Read the details here >>
