Chapter 1: Exhibition views

The pictures below of three paintings and three works on paper were taken by Catherine Mannick during the opening of the exhibition on 5 April, 1983:

—Paintings: ‘The Square near the Station’ (1981), ‘Red Pond’ (1981), and ‘WASP’ (1983)
—Works on paper: Folio V, Folio VI and one unidentified Folio, all from The Peterhof Book of Hours series.

Apart from those six works documented, at least one more work must have been displayed: its lower border can be seen in the picture presenting Folio V. The border, with XX written on the left, is irregular and casts a shadow, which is an argument in favour of it being a painting on cardboard.

Detail from the upper border of the picture above. The fragment shows the lower border of an unframed work. Judging by the shadow cast by the border, it might be a work on cardboard. The inscription on the left is ‘XX’. Another inscription on the right cannot be deciphered. In his diary, Kozlov discusses a work on paper entitled ‘XX’ regarding the selection of works for the exhibition. Presumably, the fragment belongs to this work.
