New Artists magazine 1984

In (E-E) Evgenij Kozlov's collection of his works, there is a collage from 1984 which was to become the cover of an иллюстрированный журнал, an illustrated magazine. The name of the editors, Новые художники, New Artists, stands right at the top, with Art and Fashion (Искусство — мода) next to it. This collage might actually be the first written mention of the New Artists as a group, at least to my knowledge.

Kozlov applied the names of five contributors with transferable lettering: E. Kozlov, I. Sotnikov, T. Novikov, O. Kotelnikov, K. Khazanovich (read clockwise). These are the same artists as those from (in all likelihood) the first comprehensive New Artists exhibition, organised at Timur Novikov's place "ASSA Gallery" in the summer of 1984. It therefore seems plausible that the project of an illustrated magazine was the result of their collaboration at the exhibition.

Displaying a rather large amount of text fragments – cut-outs from newspapers, some short, others longer – the collage is quite informative. Information includes the magazine's sections: music, painting, poetry, recommendations, photography, fashion, theatre, sport, dance, advertisement, culture. The names of the artists are loosely connected to specific sections: photography (Sotnikov, Kozlov), dance (Novikov), advertisement (Kotelnikov), and culture (Khazanovich).

The central element of the collage, however, is large cut-out from an illustrated magazine displaying the figure of a man seated in an electric wheelchair he is steering with transmitter sticks. Looking somewhat frightened, or perhaps simply excited, he is obviously taking part in some technical experimental monitored by a scientist in a lab coat. The image and the slogans placed around it – "avant-garde”, “new painting", "new edition" – all stress the concept of novel approach to art, especially with the line at the bottom Тимур Новиков открывает новый этап / Timur Novikov opens a new stage.

Since the collage is numbered 1 / 1984, one may assume that the magazine was conceivd as a long-term project. Yet it was abandoned at an early stage, and it seems that only Kozlov carried out his part, dedicated to fashion and photography. Five pages still exist in Kozlov's collection, of which two include pictures from the Fashion Show series and another one includes a picture from his series "Good Evening Gustav". Two more pages from the magazine are documented in pictures, but their whereabouts are unkown.

This colour reproduction shows a collage presumably created for the New Artists magazine.
The rectangular cut-out in the upper half with body-builders is from an American magazine. The text, "When you start piling on muscles" inspired the title of a painting from 1985/1986 Когда вы начинаете чувствовать мускулы! (When you Start Feeling Muscles), E-E-186019 more >>
